How to Play Minesweeper

Master the rules, understand the numbers, and win every board.

1

The Objective

Uncover every cell on the board that does not contain a mine. Click a mine and you lose. Clear all safe cells and you win. The numbers are your only clues.

2

What the Numbers Mean

Each revealed number tells you exactly how many mines are hidden among its 8 adjacent cells. A 1 means one neighboring cell is a mine. A 3 means three of its neighbors are mines. A blank cell has zero mine-neighbors and automatically expands.

3

Flagging Mines

Long-press (or right-click) a cell you know is a mine to place a flag on it. Flags prevent accidental clicks and help you track which cells are safe. You must flag or avoid all mines to win.

4

The First Click

Your first click is always safe — minesweeper generates the mine layout after your first move. Starting near the center or a corner often triggers a large cascade of revealed cells to get you started.

Minesweeper Strategy Tips

  • 1-1 pattern: Two adjacent 1s with one shared unrevealed neighbor — that neighbor is the mine.
  • Satisfied numbers: If a number already has as many flags as its value, every other neighbor is safe to click.
  • Corners and edges have fewer neighbors, making them easier to deduce from.
  • When stuck, favor cells adjacent to smaller numbers — they have fewer mine possibilities.
  • Daily practice builds pattern recognition. One puzzle a day is enough to improve noticeably.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you play minesweeper?
Click to reveal cells. Numbers show how many adjacent cells contain mines. Flag cells you believe are mines by long-pressing them. Win by revealing every safe cell without hitting a mine.
What do the numbers mean in minesweeper?
Each number (1–8) tells you exactly how many of the 8 surrounding cells contain a mine. A "1" means one neighbor is a mine; a "3" means three neighbors are mines. A blank cell has zero mine-neighbors.
Is the first click in minesweeper always safe?
Yes. Minesweeper generates the mine layout after your first click, so you can never lose on the first move. Starting near the center often reveals a large safe area.
Is Daily Minesweeper free?
Yes, completely free. No ads and no in-app purchases of any kind.
Does it work offline?
Yes — 100% offline. The app makes no network connections. Your puzzle progress and streak are saved locally on your device.
How often does a new puzzle appear?
A new puzzle unlocks every day. Everyone on a given day gets the same board, so you can compare results with friends.
What difficulty levels are available?
Easy, Medium, and Hard — each with a distinct board size and mine density. The daily puzzle adapts to the difficulty you select.
